BRCGS Food Safety Standard: what does a complaint channel provide?

Food safety is a strategic pillar for any company in the food industry. An incident not only compromises the health of the consumer, but can also irreversibly damage the reputation of the brand. To avoid this, many companies implement internationally recognized standards such as the BRCGS Food Safetywhich guarantees safe, legal and quality processes.

However, complying with the standard should not be limited to the minimum required. Today, integrating compliance tools, such as an internal complaints channel, can make the difference between a formal certification and a real food safety culture.

What is the BRCGS Food Safety Standard?

The BRCGS (Brand Reputation through Compliance Global Standard), created by the British Retail Consortium, is one of the most recognized standards worldwide within the Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI).

Its main objectives are:

  • To guarantee the food safety of the products.
  • Comply with applicable legislation.
  • Protect the brand and reputation of manufacturers and distributors.
  • Ensure quality and consistency in the processes.

Although the standard does not explicitly require a whistleblower channel, it does require that effective internal communication mechanisms are in place and that management demonstrates commitment to the food safety culture.

BRCGS requirements and recommendations

In order to achieve certification, the standard establishes a very specific framework of requirements, among which the following stand out:

  1. Top management commitment → visible leadership and food safety culture.
  2. HACCP system → documented and reviewed hazard analysis and critical control points.
  3. Food safety and quality management system → procedures, records and documentary control.
  4. Standards for the work environment → facilities, hygiene, maintenance, pest control.
  5. Product and process control → from raw material to distribution.
  6. Staff training and competencies → ensure that everyone understands their role in food safety.
  7. Traceability and supplier management → ability to trace lots and ensure chain reliability.
  8. Fraud risk management and food defense → plans against adulteration, sabotage or intentional contamination.
  9. Communication and culture → foster internal channels that allow reporting problems without retaliation.

This is where a whistleblower channel becomes the ideal tool to cover and reinforce this last point.

Where does a whistleblower channel fit in?

An internal information channel is a natural ally of the BRCGS. Its benefits go beyond legal compliance (such as Law 2/2023 in Spain, which requires companies with more than 50 employees to have one):

  1. Reinforces food safety culture.
Employees have a safe and confidential avenue to report incidents, malpractices or non-compliance that could compromise product quality.
  2. It prevents food fraud and adulteration.
The standard requires controls against food fraud and food defense. A whistleblower channel enables detection of tampering or fraud attempts before they reach the market.
  3. Provides evidence in audits.
Showing that the organization has a formal mechanism for confidential communication is a clear sign of management’s commitment to continual improvement.
  4. Protect the brand.
Early detection of an internal problem can prevent penalties, product recalls or high-impact reputational damage.

A strategic added value

While the BRCGS sets out the what (having communication systems and safety culture in place), the whistleblowing channel provides the how: a structured, safe and traceable solution that turns the standard into a living practice within the organization.

As a result, more and more companies in the food industry are integrating their internal reporting channel into their BRCGS management system, making it a key compliance, safety and reputation tool.
